New interviews online

British Library
On 28 November, we formally deposited 235 hours of recordings with the British Library Sound Archive, both in tape and digital form. This means that the recordings will be available to a worldwide audience for all time. Rob Perks, Oral History Curator at the British Library Sound Archive said, “We are proud to host the Speaking for Ourselves collection as archived resources of first-hand accounts from disabled people are still relatively rare in British archives and libraries. This is an important addition to our growing oral history collections relating to the experience of disability in the UK.”
Wellcome Library
The unedited footage from our video interviews have been archived with the Wellcome Library, who are hoping to make all of Scope’s archive film footage, dating back to the early days of The Spastics Society, available on the internet. This is a very exciting possibility! There is also a volunteering opportunity to help catalogue this historically important film collection, so please contact us if you are interested!
Work in schools
Speaking for Ourselves is piloting some training to schools, varying from school assemblies to staff training days, by employing disabled trainers from Disability Equality in Education. With over 1,800 teaching packs requested so far, we believe there is the potential for us to expand this work in the future. Watch this space!
IMPORTANT NOTE: Interviewers’ expenses and recorders
If you are no longer interviewing, please arrange to return your recorder to Alex. If you have expenses claims outstanding, please call 020 7619 7228 by 7 December. No expenses can be paid beyond this date.
